About Minesweeper

Read the number clues, flag hidden mines, and uncover every safe square.

Minesweeper is a grid-based deduction game. A revealed number tells you how many mines touch that square, including diagonals. Empty areas open together, while flags help you remember the cells you believe contain mines.

Your first revealed square is safe. Choose Easy (9 × 9, 10 mines), Medium (16 × 16, 40 mines), or Hard (30 × 16, 99 mines). Larger boards scroll inside the minefield so cells stay large enough to tap. Uncover every safe square to win; revealing a mine ends the round. Flagging every mine is useful, but it does not replace uncovering the safe cells. A safe first click does not guarantee that every later move can be deduced without guessing.

How to play

Choose a difficulty and reveal a square. Read its number as the count of mines among the eight surrounding squares. Flag suspected mines and reveal the remaining safe squares. If the flags around a revealed number equal that number, chording can uncover its other neighbors. Incorrect flags can make a chord reveal a mine.

Controls

Click or tap a square to reveal it. Right-click, hold a cell on a touchscreen, or press F on the focused cell to flag it. You can also switch to Flag mode before tapping. Arrow keys move the focused cell. Open a revealed number with the matching number of flags to chord its neighbors. Pan or scroll larger boards inside the minefield. Pause stops the timer and hides the board; Restart begins a fresh board.

Tips

Start with number clues next to unopened borders. When a number already touches the required flagged mines, its other neighbors are candidates to open. Flags are your assumptions, so verify them before using a chord.

Questions about Minesweeper

What does a number mean?

It counts mines in the eight neighboring squares, including the four diagonal neighbors. Squares outside the board do not count.

Do flags make a square safe?

No. Flags mark your prediction and can be wrong. The game is won by revealing every square that does not contain a mine.
